This year, I wanted to do something extra-rad for the Zank series. Unfortunately the guy with the flamethrower guitar from Mad Max wasn’t available to play the SSCX National Anthem before every race (also getting the rights to early Judas Priest songs is surprisingly expensive) so I went with the next best thing: Partnering with some seriously excellent artists / designers to make some awesome Zank stuff for y’all.
The first design we’re releasing is from Jordan Shively. He ran / runs a twitter account called Dread Singles (@hottestsingles
) where – as best as I can describe – he makes singles ads in a vaguely Lovecraftian voice. Lately he’s moved away from the early incarnation / concept (which was pretty amazing, my description is not even close to adequate) to a more standard social media interface, but has launched a site called Void Merch, where he designs / sells some very weird, very nerdy, and very well-designed stuff.
As most of us are current or former D&D kids, we were naturally drawn to his designs – particularly the d20 pride flag
. I approached him about crossing the tabletop RPG and bike nerd streams, and he almost immediately turned around a perfect image that brought together our history of rolling dice in basements, ripping corners with our friends, and our commitment to inclusion and equality in all our endeavors. I mean, just look at it:
Unfortunately, just before we were set to release all this radness into the world, DHer and human force of nature Amanda Batty suffered a brutal injury to her leg. Amanda has been one of the loudest, clearest, and unapologetic voices for equality in our sport, even occasionally compromising her own financial well-being to hold the line for womens racing. Even though she’s a downhill/ enduro racer from half a continent away, she fully encapsulates our stance in the NECX/SSCX scene.
So instead of just selling off these things at cost to folks at the races, we’re asking a bit more so we can send Amanda some cash at the end of the season to help her recovery. We know it won’t be much, but until our national healthcare system can be changed to take care of its citizens properly, we have to help each other in any way we can. 5 bucks gets you a patch AND a sticker sent anywhere a letter can get to for normal-people postage.
Paypal 5 bucks to michael.wissell[at]gmail[dot]com with your name and address and I’ll get you set up as soon as they arrive (late next week ETA). Or just your name and what race you’ll pick them up at.
Thanks y’all. We can’t wait to see you this CX season!
